The Shapes We’re Given

Variation in a System is a visual metaphor for humanity. We come in different shapes and sizes that were dictated by our genetics, but we fill them with our unique personalities. The repeating nature of this fun pattern is meant to symbolize the cyclical nature of cellular division.

I started with 4in square pieces of paper and drew random shapes and taped them together until they completed a seamless design. I love the juxtaposition of the amorphous blob shapes being filled with purposeful, unique drawings. Then I scanned all 4 squares and digitally painted the pattern in photoshop where I am able to endlessly repeat it on an surface like fabric or the fine art paper in my artist book, or the screen prints that tessellated as a fun installation.
